At the NANOCON´24 conference Prof. Bengt Fadeel will deliver a plenary lecture on nanotoxicology.
Background and Education:
Prof. Bengt Fadeel obtained his M.D. at Karolinska Institutet in 1997 and his Ph.D. at Karolinska Institutet in 1999. He is a board-certified physician since 2001, and a Full Professor at Karolinska Institutet since 2010. He was the Vice Chairman of the Institute of Environmental Medicine from 2009–2013 and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Institute of Environmental Medicine since 2023.
He was an Adjunct Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Pittsburgh 2011–2016. He was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS) in 2012. He is Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Toxicology and a member of the editorial board of several other journals.

Research interests:
Research aims of the Division of Molecular Toxicology headed by Prof. Fadeel are to identify and characterize molecular and biochemical processes that are induced by exposure to toxic substances including engineered nanomaterials. The laboratory is also engaged in studies of the molecular mechanisms of inflammation. The nanotoxicological research focuses on the elucidation of mechanisms underlying the toxicity of nanomaterials and other advanced materials with particular focus on hazardous effects on the immune system. Additionally, biomedical applications of nanomaterials are addressed. The latter work is supported through the European Innovation Council (EIC) funded project PERSEUS. The laboratory has also participated in the Graphene Flagship (2013–2023).
