Personal Background and Education:
Elżbieta Pamuła is a full professor in biomaterials engineering at the AGH University of Kraków, Poland. She obtained double degree in materials science (1990) and chemical technology (1994) and after earned PhD (1995), DSc (2009) and professor title (2014) in materials science. She was appointed as a postdoctoral researcher at UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium in 1998 and 2001, and as a visiting professor at Sydney University in 2018. She completed several short-term visits as invited professor, e.g., in UCLouvain and University Gent, Belgium; TU Dresden, Germany; Oslo University, NTNU Trondheim, Norway; CY Paris Université, France; Porto University, Portugal. In 2016 she was elected the President of the Polish Society for Biomaterials and in 2023 the Council Member of the European Society for Biomaterials holding the position of the Education Officer. In 2020, the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE) awarded Prof. Pamuła the title of Fellow Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE). In 2024 Prof. Pamuła became a member of the Steering Committee of the International College of Fellows Biomaterials Science and Engineering, where she is serving as the Secretary.
Research interests:
The current research focus of Prof. Pamuła is on: drug delivery systems based on resorbable (polymeric) and stimuli sensitive (lipid, magnetic) nano- and microparticles for local administration (inhalable, injectable, implantable formulations); resorbable polymer processing into scaffolds for bone/cartilage tissue engineering; osteochondral plugs produced by enzymatic mineralization of hydrogels; development of barrier membranes for guided tissue regeneration in periodontology; ceramic TiO2 and ZrO2 scaffolds decorated with drug-loaded polymeric nanoparticles for bone tissue engineering.
